Testing 1, 2, 3. Examinations need a reality check.

Jim bought some chocolates and gave half of it to Ken. Ken bought some sweets and gave half of it to Jim. Jim ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates. The ratio of Jim’s sweets to chocolates became 1:7 and the ratio of Ken’s sweets to chocolates became 1:4. How many sweets did Ken buy?

Answer? 68.

2 things to highlight here.
1) Ken & Jim are rich! I can't imagine myself having enough to buy 68 sweets, back then.
2) Diabetes & Headache.

sure I can solve this algebraically and/or with diagrams without the pressure of time. but in an examination room setting, the clock is ticking and it probably doesn't help that the snorings from the napping invigilator are in the rhythm of Sun Ho's aka Lady-Gaga-Wannabe dance hits. enough to give an ex-CHCer a headache.

maybe they should change the "story" in the question to something more .... "everyday".

Jim has a mobile plan with 250 sms free per month. Ken has a mobile plan with 300 mins free per month. Jim let Ken send half of the sms and Ken let Jim call a chatline for 45 mins. how much would the telcomm overcharge Ken for the usage? or for that matter, what would Ken's mum say?

"no more chocolates for you!"
